Serial# info

I recently purchased what appears to be an Old Town 16 footer. The serial # is distinct except for the first digit. It's the same at bow & stern. I think it is 60548 16. Does this fit with the OT numbering scheme? Thanks, Al

The Old Town numbering scheme is simply a sequential serial number followed by a space and the length of the canoe in feet so this does fit. However, many manufacturers used the same scheme and the build record for the Old Town with number 60548 shows a 17 foot long canoe. I looked at 160548, 80548, 30548, and several others in the x0548 pattern but didn't find a 16 foot canoe. The information at http://forums.wcha.org/showthread.php?791 may help you discover if there are any missing or hidden digits. Can you verify the exact overall length between the extreme ends of the canoe and attach some pictures, especially ones showing the decks and all of the serial numbers on the inside stems from each end? Thanks,

Benson

Hi Benson,
After much scrubbing, the # 130548 16 appeared at each end. It does measure 16' OA and has diamond headed bolts which attach the thwarts. Does this make more sense?

Thanks,
Al

Yes, the Old Town canoe with serial number 130548 is a 16 foot long, CS (Common Sense or middle) grade, HW (heavy water) model with low ends (like the guide model), open spruce gunwales, ash outside finish rails, ash thwarts, a keel, and no seats,. It was built between July and December, 1940. The original exterior paint color was aluminum. It shipped on December 27th, 1940 to Hope Valley, Rhode Island. A scan showing this build record can be found by following the link at the attached thumbnail image below.

This scan and several hundred thousand more were created with substantial grants from the Wooden Canoe Heritage Association (WCHA) and others. A description of the project to preserve these records is available at http://www.wcha.org/ot_records/ if you want more details. I hope that you will join or renew your membership to the WCHA so that services like this can continue. See http://www.wcha.org/about-the-wcha/ to learn more about the WCHA and http://store.wcha.org/WCHA-New-Membership.html to renew.

It is also possible that you could have another number or manufacturer if this description doesn't match your canoe. Feel free to reply here if you have any other questions,

Benson

Thanks Benson,
That's the right description.

It's cool that the canoe was built for Camp Yawgoog which is the Scout Reservation for the Narragansett Council BSA. I have been going to Yawgoog for about 25 years as a scout leader. That makes it especially significant for me! I'll try to do a good job restoring it.

BTW I will join WCHA, thanks again.
