Curious about Wooden Canoes
Hi All.

We have a 1917 Old Town HW, 16 feet long in CS grade with open gunnels. It has had some inwale and outwale work done over the years so we are looking to return it to its original configuration by replacing both.

My question is what fasteners were used to attach the seat frames, thwarts and yoke in 1917? I am assuming some sort of steel, brass or bronze carriage bolt. Would they have been surface mounted or countersunk and bunged? (The current fasteners are all round headed carriage bolts surface mounted). I know the diamond head bolts only came into use around 1922.

Thank you!

My guess would be countersunk and bunged as shown in the example below.
