Priming the keel?

Josh

Curious about Wooden Canoes
I´m making an old chestnut pal nice. It´s no restoration because the canvas is in good condition and I found no broken rips. Only a few planks are cracked but I decided it is to neglect.
I sanded the interior about 6 hard and sometimes exhausting weeks and now it is varnished. Looks very nice! I sanded the hull, because I want it red, and the keel. Before varnishing the hull I wonder if the keel must be grounded.
What do you do? Coating the keel with the same paint as the hull or use a primer?
Thanks for answering
