Happy Thanksgiving!
I recently purchased a 1950 old town boat with the hull identification number of: 14154577

Any information is much appreciated

Hi Lou--

Check the numbers again, on both stems. I looked up 141545 17 and it was a 20 foot guide model. The Old Town serial numbers on CD are up to six digits long, followed by a space and the length of the canoe.

If you have trouble reading the numbers, sometimes digital photography brings them out and if you post the picture, many eyes can work on it. Pictures, in general, can help a lot... and give us a chance to see what you found!

Lou, Kathy:

On a hunch, I tried something - 154577 - 14. Maybe this works.

154577 is a 14' lapstrake square stern with 48" midship deck, shipped on 20 July 1950 to The Weirs, NH. A scan of the build card is posted below.

This scan and several hundred thousand others were created with substantial grants from the Wooden Canoe Heritage Association (WCHA) and others. A description of the project to preserve these records is available at http://www.wcha.org/ot_records/ if you want more details. I hope that you and anyone else reading this will join or renew membership in the WCHA so that services like this can continue. See http://www.wcha.org/wcha/ to learn more about the WCHA and http://www.wcha.org/join.php to renew.

It is also possible that you could have another number or manufacturer if this description doesn't match your canoe. Feel free to reply here if you have any other questions.

Wow! Thanks for the lightning fast response! I took that number directly from the title. The boat is currently in Va; soon to be delivered to Fl, so I am not able to confirm any numbers from the actual boat. It is a little square stern runabout, so I imagine the "-14" is accurate. Is there any other place I can go to find pictures and stats on this particular make/style of boat?

Again, thank you very much for your efforts!

Attached is a page from the 1950 Old Town catalog, courtesy of "The Complete Old Town Canoe Company Catalog Collection, 1901- 1993", available on CD from http://www.wcha.org/catalog/ and http://www.dragonflycanoe.com/cdrom.htm on the web.

Thanks, Roger, for figuring this out! I was thrown-off because "the usual" Old Town canoes don't come in a 14 foot size! Looks like you found a sweet little boat, Lou! Post pictures when she's in your hands.
