Dave: The Old Town canoe with serial number 36173 is a 16 foot long, CS grade, HW model with birch decks, thwarts and seats. This canoe has a keel. It was built between January and March 1915. The original exterior paint color was dark green. It shipped on April 11, 1915 to Concord, NH. A scan of this build record can be found by following the link at the attached thumbnail image below.

This scan and several hundred thousand others were created with substantial grants from the Wooden Canoe Heritage Association (WCHA) and others. A description of the project to preserve these records is available at http://www.wcha.org/ot_records/ if you want more details. I hope that you will join or renew your membership to the WCHA so that services like this can continue. See http://www.wcha.org/wcha/ to learn more about the WCHA and http://www.wcha.org/join.php to join.

It is also possible that you could have another number or manufacturer if this description doesn't match your canoe. Feel free to reply here if you have any other questions.

OOps! Wrong number requested

This build record did not match up with the canoe. I rechecked to find it to be 66173-16. I'm thinking that the stems were replaced at one time. The numbers are smaller than the typical OT stamped numbers.
Look forward to seeing this record. It should show mahogany decks.
Thanks
Dave

Dave: Hopefully this is it, a "AA" grade Ideal. The Old Town canoe with serial number 66173 is a 16 foot long, AA grade, Ideal model with mahogany decks, thwarts and seats. This canoe has half ribs and a keel. It was built between May and August 1921. The original exterior paint color was dark red, there is also a comment on the line but I can't read it. It shipped on February 20, 1922 to Decateur, Illinois. A scan of this build record can be found by following the link at the attached thumbnail image below.
