Curious about Wooden Canoes
I'm planning to pick up this canoe tomorrow. It's a 16' Guide, currently painted blue. Is the OT build record available for it? Thanks. Dale

Well, the build record for 109516 say's that it is a 16' Otca in CS grade with open spruce gunwales, and oak seats, decks and thwarts. It had a keel and was originally painted maroon before being shipped to Abbott Academy in Andover, MA on May 17, 1932. A copy of the build record is attached.

Scans of approximately 210,000 records were created with substantial grants from the Wooden Canoe Heritage Association (WCHA) and others. Additional information about the project to preserve these records is available at http://www.wcha.org/catalogs/old-town/records/ if you want more details. Please join WCHA or make a tax deductable contribution so that services like this can continue. See http://www.wcha.org/wcha/ to learn more about the WCHA and http://www.wcha.org/join.html to join. A 10 minute video on WCHA is viewable at http://www.wcha.org/wcha_video.php. If you are already a WCHA member, THANK YOU!

It is also possible that you could have another number or manufacturer if this description doesn't match your canoe. Feel free to reply here if you have any other questions.

Canoe is home

And it's definitely an Otca. The paint is cracked badly down to the filler and the existing canvas has been off and put back on. The keel and stem bands have been sealed with silicone rather than bedding compound. So my quandary is whether to strip the paint and recoat the enamel just to get through this coming season and then put new canvas on next winter or to try and get new canvas on this winter and have it ready to use in 2009. The interior varnish is in great shape. The gunwales need to be sanded and varnished - they're down to bare wood in some places. Suggestions?
