Curious about Wooden Canoes
I have #184476, was presented to my uncle on his retirement. Needs restoration, the canvas has been removed. Advice?

Old Town #184476 is a 15 foot light weight model, fitted with a keel and painted dark green before being shipped to L.L. Bean in Freeport, ME 12/18/1970. Build record attached below.
Scans of approximately 210,000 records were created with substantial grants from the Wooden Canoe Heritage Association (WCHA) and others. Your family heirloom could be a handy little boat for exploring rivers and lakes... a canoe your car could wear all summer, like a hat-- allowing you to enjoy the nice days on the water.
Others here will jump in with advice to help you get it ready to paddle... but the process usually begins with getting a copy of The Wood & Canvas Canoe by Jerry Stelmock and Rollin Thurlow.

Curious about Wooden Canoes
That was a quick reply, Thanks Kathryn! No pictures yet. I recently moved and need to find my camera and the thingy that lets me download to my computer. The canvas has been removed (not by me) and I can't see any real problems like rot. There is a glob of some kind of automotive(?) filler that looks like a broken rib repair. The varnish needs to be renewed also. I probably won't be able to get to this project until next winter; have an old sloop that needs to go back in the water this year first.

another question: I'll be looking for canvas for this canoe when I do finally get time to work on it. I know essentially nothing about re-canvassing a canoe, so will be spending considerable time here, I expect.
