Old Town Serial Number

I am interested in the build record for Old Town serial number 64023 16.

Thanks in advance,

Mike

Old Town 64023 is a 16 foot CS (common sense) grade Charles River model, finished between December of 1920 and April of 1921. It has red Western cedar planking, spruce gunwales and birch decks/thwarts/seat frames. The canoe was fitted with a keel and painted dark red... looks like it may have been given the name "bandit"?--- that part is hard to read. It was shipped May 6, 1921 to a town in New York, but the town doesn't come up in a Google search of "Genocock" or "Geuocock"... I figure you New Yorkers can dope that one out better than I!

The scan of this record is attached below-- click on it to get a larger image. This scan and several hundred thousand others were created with substantial grants from the Wooden Canoe Heritage Association (WCHA) and others. A description of the project to preserve these records is available at http://www.wcha.org/ot_records/ if you want more details. I hope that you will renew your membership to the WCHA so that services like this can continue. See http://www.wcha.org/wcha/ to learn more about the WCHA and http://www.wcha.org/join.php to renew.

It is also possible that you could have another number or manufacturer if this description don't match your canoe. Feel free to reply here if you have any other questions.

Ot 64023

Thanks Kathryn,

This is a canoe that was recently posted in the classifieds. The lister suggests that it was built in the 60's. I looked at it yesterday and had hard time believing that it was that young.

The canoe is very restorable. It needs three ribs, some planking, a couple outside rails and the tip of one stem needs to be spliced back in. It's actually in pretty good shape for it's age and the price. I have some photo's if anyone is interested.

As far as where this canoe was shipped, if there ever was a town by that name in New York, it is no more. Perhaps it was taxed out of existence.
