I have what I believe to be an Old town Wooden canoe. Canvas covered wood with the Serial Number 73066. Can someone tell me the approximate date of build and maybe a value range from poor to refinished?

Thank you

The Old Town canoe with serial number 73066 is a 17 foot long, AA (or top) grade, Otca model with red western cedar planking, open mahogany gunwales, mahogany decks, mahogany thwarts, mahogany seats, a keel, and two double width mahogany slat back rests. It was built between July, 1922 and January, 1923. The original exterior paint was dark red. It shipped on April 16th, 1923 to Graterford(?), Penna. A scan showing this build record can be found by following the link at the attached thumbnail image below.

This scan and several hundred thousand more were created with substantial grants from the Wooden Canoe Heritage Association (WCHA) and others. A description of the project to preserve these records is available at http://www.wcha.org/ot_records/ if you want more details. I hope that you will join or renew your membership to the WCHA so that services like this can continue. See http://www.wcha.org/about-the-wcha/ to learn more about the WCHA and http://store.wcha.org/WCHA-New-Membership.html to join.

It is also possible that you could have another number or manufacturer if this description doesn't match your canoe. The information at http://forums.wcha.org/showthread.php?57 has a good summary of how to value a wooden canoe. It is usually best to avoid any restoration or repair attempts if your intent is to sell it for the maximum net return. The classifieds at http://wcha.org/pp-classifieds/ are usually the fastest way to find a good new home for it. Feel free to reply here if you have any other questions,

Benson
