Just got a 1948 (9?) Old Town Sea Boat serial #161948, looking for build sheet and horsepower rating.

Thanks!

The Old Town boat with serial number 161948 is a 16 foot long, AA (or top) grade, Ocean boat with a mid deck, a keel, outside stems, and a floor rack. It was built in May, 1954. The original exterior was not finished although the inside deck and rails were. It shipped on June 10th, 1954 to Blue Hill, Maine. A scanned copy of this build record can be found by following the link behind the attached thumbnail image below.

This scan and several hundred thousand others were created with substantial grants from the Wooden Canoe Heritage Association (WCHA) and others. A description of the project to preserve these records is available at http://www.wcha.org/ot_records/ if you want more details. I hope that you will renew your membership to the WCHA so that services like this can continue. See http://www.wcha.org/about-the-wcha/ to learn more about the WCHA and http://store.wcha.org/WCHA-New-Membership.html to join.

The Ocean boat model was listed in the catalogs from 1931 to 1956. Some other pictures of similar boats and the description from the 1947 catalog are shown at http://forums.wcha.org/showthread.php?11143 here. More pictures like this and other Old Town boats are available from http://store.wcha.org/The-Complete-Old-Town-Canoe-Company-Catalog-Collection-CD-ROM.html in the Old Town Catalog Collection. The 1954 catalog lists the speeds with motors up to 25 horsepower.

It is also possible that you could have another number or manufacturer. Feel free to reply here if you have any other questions.

Well, thanks for the info, the 6 in the serial number is rather faint and I'm wondering if it's another number (although all the restoration paperwork I have on the boat lists it as stated). Here's a couple photos that might be helpful.

Your pictures don't show a mid deck so my guess is that you may have the Old Town boat with serial number 151948. This is a 16 foot long, AA (or top) grade, canvas covered sea model boat with a keel, outside stems, a floor rack, bilge keels, narrow board seat and a bang plate along the full length of the keel. It was built between November, 1948 and January, 1949. The original exterior paint color was dark green with G. S. (Guide's Special) green. It shipped on February 23rd, 1949 to Sanford, Maine. The back side of the record shows that it returned for repairs on February 25th, 1953 and was shipped back on April 4th, 1953. Scans showing both sides of this build record can be found by following the links behind the attached thumbnail images below.

It is also possible that you could have another number or manufacturer if this description don't match your boat. Feel free to reply here if you have any other questions.

Looking at the faint second number of the serial number on the transom stem, I'm thinking it's a 5, not a 6, despite the paper trail dating from Rollin Thurlow's 1994 restoration. Anyone care to run it?

Much appreciated.

Bingo, we have Bingo! Yes, I bought the boat from the son (for whom, supposedly, the boat was bought was bought on the occasion of his birth) of the original owner in Sanford. It was restored by Rollin Thurlow in 1994 and again by Jonathan Minott in 2005, sitting well stored and unused since.

Thank you so much, this information has made me very happy!
