Old Town # 694x4

Could someone please look up Old Town # 694x4 17? Should be a Molitor model. Does that fit with anything in that series? 4th digit looks like 3/5/6/8 (rounded bottom). Thanks for checking!

The build record for 69494 is missing but the 69454 and 69414 ones below are the only 17 foot long AA grade canoes that I could find in the 694x4 series. The best match appears to be 69414 since it has thirty inch decks on each end. How long are the decks, are they the same length on each end and can you attach some pictures of the canoe and the serial numbers?

These scans and several hundred thousand more were created with substantial grants from the Wooden Canoe Heritage Association (WCHA) and others as you probably know well. A description of the project to preserve these records is available at http://www.wcha.org/ot_records/ if you want more details. I hope that you will join or renew your membership to the WCHA so that services like this can continue. See http://www.wcha.org/about-the-wcha/ to learn more about the WCHA and http://store.wcha.org/WCHA-New-Membership.html to join.

It is also possible that you could have another number or manufacturer if this description don't match the canoe. Feel free to reply here if you have any other questions.

Hi Benson,

First, thanks very much for checking. This is in reference to a discussion from a long time ago, here:

http://forums.wcha.org/showthread.php?8339-Difficult-to-read

I'm revisiting, trying to understand the history of this canoe. I think in that thread we identified the canoe as a Carelton Indian Princess, but I think it was built as a different model (Molitor?), given a serial number, and then re-stamped when re-born as the Indian Princess. I didn't think about it until just now, but maybe the other number was probably used on a different canoe... maybe there's no way to know what it would have been. But in the Old Town series, 694xx puts it in the right timeframe - 1922/23; the Indian Princess was shipped in April, 1922. In any case, its decks are 36" bow, 24" stern. Here is another photo of the serial number, and a second where I've overlaid what I believe are the two numbers other than that "x" digit:

The first known Old Town Molitor models as shown at http://forums.wcha.org/attachment.php?attachmentid=3420&d=1104724035 and http://forums.wcha.org/attachment.php?attachmentid=3421&d=1104724703 shipped in 1921. The messages at http://forums.wcha.org/showthread.php?2656 have some more background. The absence of an Old Town build record for 69494 may be a result of your canoe starting with that number and then being converted to a Carleton Indian Princess with serial number 16605. The timing all fits. I have a Molitor from 1921 in original condition as shown at http://forums.wcha.org/showthread.php?12325] if you have any questions about how to restore yours. The 1923 Carleton Molitor advertised at http://wcha.org/pp-classifieds/showproduct.php?product=748&title=1923-molitor&cat=3 may also interest you.

any chance you have any Carleton financial records that pertain to my serial number

No, I don't have any additional Carleton information for that time period. Those books were taken out of the factory many years ago and I've been finding them randomly at auctions, used book stores, and private collections since then. The volume with the information for your canoe has not surfaced and may never be found, sorry. Please let me know if anyone knows the location of any other old books with canoe information like this. Thanks,

Benson
