[Trammel canoe]

We would appreciate any info available for this canoe. The gentleman we bought it from really didn't know alot about it. It had been a project his father stated several years ago.

The Old Town canoe with number 100220 is a 17' HW (Heavy Water) in AA grade with western cedar (red) planking and open mahogany gunwales, decks, seats and thwarts. It also has a keel, outside stems and a floor rack. It was painted dark green and shipped to Jefferson City, West Virginia on May 14, 1930. A copy of the build record is attached.

1930 Old Town HW

Thanks for your help. A floor rack did not come with the canoe. Any suggestions on how to find one or make one? Also did Old Town offer a seat with drilled holes instead of grooves or would they have been added?

Floor racks are pretty easy to make - a few strips of spruce and some cross pieces to fit between the ribs.

The seats sound like they are original. The back story, according to Benson Gray is that the workers at Old Town used to hand weave the seats at home, being paid on a per seat basis. When the Fair Labor Standards Act came into effect in 1938, "piece work" was outlawed and Old Town started using the grooved seats for the pre-woven cane.

Since seats break frequently, you will sometime see an older canoe with replacement seats that had the groove for the pre-woven cane.
