Good Afternoon!

I just became the new owner of 2 canoes that my father left me, thus my user name, NewistCanoeist! ;)

I am interested in any info on my 15 FT. Old Town Sq. Stern SN 154370 15.

The last digit, I feel fairly sure, is indeed a "0" but could be a "6". The rest of the number is very clear.

My father was a long time member of WCHA and attended many gatherings.

The other canoe is a White Guide Model that he purchased from LL Beans in the 1930s. But that's for another day!

Thanking You In Advance,

Bob

The Old Town canoe with serial number 154370 is a 15 foot long, CS (common sense or middle) grade, square ended paddling model with red western cedar planking, open spruce gunwales, half ribs, a keel, and an outside stem. It was built between June and November, 1950. The original exterior paint color was dark green enamel. It shipped on April 23rd, 1951 to Augusta, Maine.

A scan showing this build record can be found by following the link at the thumbnail image attached below. This scan and several hundred thousand others were created with substantial grants from the Wooden Canoe Heritage Association (WCHA) and others. A description of the project to preserve these records is available at http://www.wcha.org/ot_records/ if you want more details. I hope that you will join or renew your membership to the WCHA so that services like this can continue. See http://www.wcha.org/about-the-wcha/ to learn more about the WCHA and http://store.wcha.org/WCHA-New-Membership.html to join.

The record for 154376 shows a 11.5 foot long dinghy that went to Maryland so that probably isn't yours. White canoes from the 1930s typically didn't have serial numbers and there are no known White records available. Please reply here if you have any other questions.

Thank you ever so much for all the information!! We are so eager to try it out!

Although it has not been used since 1996 it is set up for rowing and motoring and is ready to go. My wife and I plan on using it as it was intended!!

I have found pictures of my father recanvasing this OT Sq. Stern canoe (and the EM White which, sadly, he did not completely finish) in some of his papers.

Onward and Upward!!

Thank you again!

Bob
