Old Town 10892

Just returned home to Montana from Maine with a 17 foot Old Town. Closed Gunnel. Canoe was given to me by a relatives husband. Considering the age is in very good condition but was fiberglassed at some point. Winter project.

The Old Town canoe with serial number 10892 is a 17 foot long, CS grade, HW (Heavy Water) model with red western cedar planking, closed spruce gunwales, spruce decks, spruce trim, spruce outside rails, and a keel. It was built between March and June, 1910. The original exterior paint color was dark green. It shipped on June, 22nd, 1909 to New York city.

This scan and several hundred thousand others were created with substantial grants from the Wooden Canoe Heritage Association (WCHA) and others as you probably know well. Thanks Benson. I knew this was early 1900's just wasn't sure what year. Was given to me last year when we were visiting in Maine and I said I'd haul it back to Montana the following year. Considering the age it's in pretty good shape. Found 8 ribs with hair line cracks. Stems look like they may have been replaced years ago. A few small breaks in the planking and that's about it. I"ll have to think about keeping the closed gunwales or replacing with open.
