need info on old town wood canvass canoe

The Old Town canoe with serial number 19595 is shown as 16 feet long, CS (common sense or standard) grade, Charles River model with western red cedar planking, spruce gunwales and finish rails, ash decks, seats, and thwarts, equipped with a keel, and with 2 slat chairs. The canoe was built between November 1911 and March 1912. The original exterior paint was light green. It was shipped to Saginaw, Michigan in 1912, but the exact date is unclear on the buid record. A scan of this build record can be found by following the link behind the thumbnail image attached below.

This scan and several hundred thousand others were created with substantial grants from the Wooden Canoe Heritage Association (WCHA) and others. A description of the project to preserve these records is available at http://www.wcha.org/ot_records/ if you want more details. I hope that you will join or renew your membership to the WCHA so that services like this can continue. See http://www.wcha.org/about-the-wcha/ to learn more about the WCHA and http://store.wcha.org/WCHA-New-Membership.html to join.

It is also possible that you could have another number or manufacturer if this description doesn't match your canoe. Sponsons are not shown on this build record; they are usually a factory-built option and it would be unusual to add sponsons later. You may wish to take another look at the serial number.

It seems that this canoe is somewhat of a mystery. It is definitely an Old Town canoe, and the serial number, stamped into the interior planking in 2 places, fore and aft, is clear and readable - 19525. Nonetheless, I agree that an aftermarket add-on of sponsons would be quite a stretch. In addition, it also has the diamond head bolts, which were not introduced until 1922.

I think Greg inadvertently posted the wrong number. He posted 19595, not 19525.

You're right, I missed that; it explains the discrepancy. Hopefully the build record for 19525 matches this canoe. Greg?

The Old Town build record for serial number 19525 shows an 18 foot long canoe which does not match your description. My guess is that you have the Carleton canoe with this serial number. It shows a 16 foot long Carleton model in CS (Common Sense or the middle) grade with red western cedar planking, open spruce gunwales, ash decks, ash thwarts, ash seats, a keel, a floor rack, and sponsons. It was built between December, 1926 and June, 1927. The exterior paint color was dark green. It shipped on July 1st, 1927 to Stony Creek, New York. Scans showing both of these build records can be found by following the links at the attached thumbnail images below.
