mastic for canvas filler

I watched a video of a builder using "mastic," a type of pipe insulation, for canvas filler. It appears to be applied easily with a spatula-type instrument, with several layers applied after drying time. Is anyone else familiar with this material used for a filler instead of the "conventional" filler?

I experimented with Childer's CP-50A, which is a pipe lagging compound that seemed to have all the characters required of a filler. Bakore is a similar product available in Canada.

While it worked, I had issues with finish puckering that I was not happy with, so I stopped using it.

That was probably my video. I have used a particular mastic for over 12 years with no issues was so ever and no warranties or complaints. Could be the brand or properties of this particular one that handles differently.
