Kennebec Torpedo #

The Kennebec Canoe Company placed serial number 17588 on an 18 foot long canoe so my guess is that you have the one with number 17583. This number is shown on page 284 of volume three in the Kennebec ledgers. It was assigned to 17 foot long Kennebec Katahdin model type A that was planked by Varney on January 5th, 1924. The canvas covering was applied by Tuttle on January 19th and filled by Grant on the same day. The second filler coat was completed by Saucier on January 28th, 1924 and the rails were installed by Oaks on the same day. It was painted orange and black with a gold stripe. It shipped to location "24-68" on March 18th, 1924. This location is probably an order number but we don't currently have enough information to identify it. The scans of these build records can be found by following the links at the attached thumbnail images below. The original Kennebec records are reproduced through the courtesy of the Maine State Museum.

The microfilms and scans of these records were created with substantial grants from the Wooden Canoe Heritage Association (WCHA). I hope that you will renew your membership to the WCHA so that services like this can continue. See http://www.wcha.org/wcha/ to learn more about the WCHA and http://www.wcha.org/join.php to renew.

It is also possible that you could have another number or manufacturer if this description doesn't match the boat. Feel free to reply here if you have any other questions.
