Enthusiastic about Wooden Canoes
I am now the proud owner of a 1945 St. Louis Boat and Canoe Company canoe with the original decal and serial number 2207. How it ended up in rural South Georgia is anybodys guess. Overall condition very good, after removing tons of bondo.

Congratulations on your find! Love to see more pictures of the decal and the stem number.
According to our research here in St. Louis, 1945 seems about right. St. Louis Boat and Canoe was selling to an Army base in that area during the war. Can you send more photos? Does it have outside stems?

There is a long article on this company in back issues of Wooden Canoe-- Wally Hauck is one of the experts on this canoe. A very interesting history.
Wooden Canoe back issues are available from the WCHA Store:
St. Louis Boat & Canoe Company
issue number 146:6-13
serial numbers of: issue number 144:7

Additional information about the company history is available at http://forums.wcha.org/knowledgebase/Manufacturers:St+Louis+Meramec+Canoe+Company and chapter 8 on pages 57 to 60 in Sue Audette's book about the Old Town Canoe Company describes Alfred Wickett's departure from the Old Town Canoe Company and eventual founding of the St. Louis Boat and Canoe Company with his son Laurence (a.k.a. "Chummy"). This book is available from http://store.wcha.org/The-Old-Town-Canoe-Company.html and other sources.

Thanks for the photos. Looks like it is in great shape. I was glad to see the 2277 number on the stem because the first number you listed (2207) came up as a 12 ft. AutoCarry. The 2277 number on our boards says 16 ft. OS. That's the only reference to that number that we have. Numbers were simply written on boards we found lying around the old shop before the bldg. was torn down. As to why it's in southern Georgia, I don't know. WE have some records that show they were selling canoes to the Marines during 1944. I'll attach an invoice to a South Carolina company that was selling them to the Marines in North Carolina. That's as close as I can get. The invoices we have end in 1944 and we know of 9 canoes shipped to N. Carolina. The rest of the records are written on planking and gives the length, and if it a canoe, hunter or auto carry, and if it had outside stems, 1/2 ribs or sponsons.

I've never seen a catalog for St. Louis Boat and Canoe, but they were shipping canoes to Detroit, Kansas City, Akron, OH and other midwest cities. Let me know if I can help with any other information.
Wally

Thanks Wally . That is really cool information. Part of the beauty of something like this for me is the back story and history. As my restoration goes along i'm sure I will have questions.
Thanks
Sam
