Carleton 18230 is a 16 foot CS (common sense) grade Carleton model canoe. Note that the last two digits of your serial number are the canoe's length... this sometimes helps us determine if we've found the correct record, and so far this seems right... but be sure to connect the other details with what you're seeing, and if there are questions, post pictures.
The canoe has red Western cedar planking, open spruce gunwales, and birch decks, thwarts, and seat frames, and it has a keel. It was originally painted bright red and was shipped to the W.A. Abel Company of Syracuse, NY on February 8, 1925. A confusing part of the record is that it states the canoe was finished between September 1923 and December 1925 (looking at the right side of the record). I'm wondering if they neglected to set the date-stamp to 1926. At any rate, it's one of those canoes that was finished over the course of a couple years!
Very interesting reverse side... this is where the Old Town Company (who owned Carleton and kept these records) made notations regarding inquiries about a particular canoe. The second name is that of Jack McGrievey, and unless this is another person with the same name living in New York State, he's one of our board members and you may get some additional history on your canoe by contacting him... unless it was simply one of thousands he restored and he has no specific memory of it... but he did contact Old Town for information on the canoe in 1978.
