Curious about Wooden Canoes
Could this canoe be about 100 years old? Please supply available info on this beauty. Thanks, Jim Cantwell...

The Old Town canoe with serial number 21234 was shipped from Old Town in the spring, 100 years ago. The canoe is 16 feet long, CS (Common Sense or standard) grade, a Charles River model with western cedar planking, spruce gunwales, ash seats and thwarts, birch decks, spruce finish rails, and was equipped with a keel. The canoe was built in 1912, within finishing completed on April 11 of that year. The original exterior paint color was dark green. It was shipped to William Read and Sons, Boston, Mass. on April 25, 1912. A scan of this build record can be found by following the link behind the thumbnail image attached below.

This scan and several hundred thousand others were created with substantial grants from the Wooden Canoe Heritage Association (WCHA) and others. A description of the project to preserve these records is available at http://www.wcha.org/ot_records/ if you want more details. I hope that you will join or renew your membership to the WCHA so that services like this can continue. See http://www.wcha.org/about-the-wcha/ to learn more about the WCHA and http://store.wcha.org/WCHA-New-Membership.html to join.

It is also possible that you could have another number or manufacturer if this description doesn't match your canoe. Feel free to reply here if you have any other questions.

Greg. Thanks for the info. I'm excited to have a 100 year old OT. I gave my son my 15' trapper (1965), and my restored 16' unknown w/c to my grandson, leaving me with an unknown, but beautiful cedar stripper and a 12' Raddison, light enough for this old man to put on car and off. This 100 year Old Town came from a multi-generational ME family, that has several other wooden boats I may get an opportunity to purchase. I'll post some pix in a bit. Again thanks. Jim...

Hello Jim,
