I have a cedar strip canoe that was my father's. Purchased from Eaton's store in Toronto about 1946-47. Serial #1434 5435.
I recovered it and stripped it down about 15 years ago, but it is starting to show signs of wear. Just wondering who the manufacturer is and what it may be worth. In Parry Sound, ON.

Your canoe was built by the Peterborough Canoe Company. The first part of the serial number (1434) is the model number, which indicates a 16' Champlain (pleasure) model.

See this page for information about valuing your canoe: http://forums.wcha.org/showthread.php?57-How-much-is-my-old-wooden-canoe-worth

For a first hand evaluation, you might try contacting Pam Wedd at Bearwood Canoe Company in Parry Sound (see http://www.wcha.org/buildsupply/on.php). Pam is a highly accomplished canoe builder and restorer.
