E.M. White Guide Canoe

Brly

Enthusiastic about Wooden Canoes
Working on a second model as a birthday gift for my Dad. 18.5' L x 36" beam at 1/6 scale comes out to 37" L x 6" beam. White cedar ribs, WRC planks, spruce gunwales. Think I'll do the thwarts, seat frames and decks in maple. Popped it off the form yesterday. I'll get the ends buttoned up and finish planking.

How are you fastening the planks to the ribs? On the last couple of models I've done I have used the heat melting veneer glue sheets. I buy it in sheets, stick it on the ribs, then fit each plank using a small heated iron. It is far easier to control than the super glue I used on earlier models.

I'm using superglue. It can be tough to get the planks fully down on the rib surface. I'll have to do some touch up gluing with clamps now that it's off the form, but overall it looks pretty good.

Decks in, ends buttoned up, thwarts in and planking finished. Faired the hull last night. I'll finish sand inside and out and get ready for canvas next.

It's coming along very nicely. I have neither the skill nor the patience to work in that scale.
I'm curious about the decks. A characteristic of the Whites are the very simplistic decks.

Yeah, the decks may be a bit much for this. I have already considered reshaping them. We'll see.

I was out of town last week, so just getting back to it. I went back and forth over the half ribs and ultimately decided to put them in. Finished that tonight, now on to sanding.

Nice work. Not to highjack you post, but here are a couple of my Whites I did quite a few years ago now. A guide model and a sport model.

Beautiful Chris! You definitely go the extra mile to get all of the details.
I PM'd you about using butyrate dope. Looking for some pointers there and also about contact cement if you have a few minutes.

First coat of finish went on tonight and seat frames made. More finish tomorrow and hopefully start "caning" the seats.
