Chestnut Deer....

Chest Nut
Is the Chestnut Deer model the same as a Pal?
The only difference I can see in the specs are the size of the ribs(3/8x1 1/2 on the deer) and the PVC coating on the Deer.

How does the PVC coated canvas compare to "normal" filled canvas?

I'll post some pics when I get it home later in the week.

Pal and Deer

Hi Jamie,

In Solway's "The Story of the Chestnut Canoe" he as a list near
the end of the book that gives:

Tele. Code.......Class........Len......Wid....... Depth.....note
------------+-----------+------+-------+--------+-------
Pal .............. Pleasure.......16'......34"........12"..........17
Pal/Deer.........Pleasure.......16'......36"........12 3/4".....21

Note 17: Pal has 3/8" x 1 1/2 " ribs spaced 2" apart.
Note 21: Fox,Doe, and Deer are Playmate, Chum, and Pal 1 1/2 inch
ribbing.

He also inspected Bill Mason's canoe and claims that Bill's Pleasure model
was not a Pal but a Deer because of its narrow rounded ribs.

Hope this helps.

Thanks guys

I've linked some pictures on the original post.

I have a brochure like the one the page Andy linked above and the specs are identical between the Pal and the Deer except the rib size and spacing.

Is there any benefit to the smaller ribs over the larger ones?

This canoe was originally purchased in '77.

In any appreciable sense, the Pal and the Deer are pretty much the same. I think that the wider ribs are a bit more robust.

The canoe looks to be in pretty good shape, and it is obviously a latter Chestnut as the decal indicates Oromocto for the base of operations.

Nice paddles! You don't see those around everyday, the Chestnut decal looks to be in very good shape. I see lots of Pals, but very few Chestnut paddles.
