carleton

Wooden Canoe Maniac
Possibly another carlton in the lineup to do, help with the serial # please 17 11809 the 8 is a little hard to read ,but pretty sure it's an 8 . Old carleton deck style with the carleton plate on the deck. Closed gunwale. Thanks. David Satter

David, the Carlton with the serial number 11809 is 19' long, not 17'. The only canoes with 11x09 serial numbers that are are 17' long are 11109, 11209, and 11509.

I've attached below copies of the build record for the four serial numbers -- if any of them are a clear match to your canoe (because of features like keel, outside stem, deck and thwart material, etc.), please let us know.

These scans and several hundred thousand others were created with substantial grants from the Wooden Canoe Heritage Association (WCHA) and others. A description of the project to preserve these records is available at http://www.wcha.org/ot_records/ if you want more details. I hope that you will join or renew your membership to the WCHA so that services like this can continue. See http://www.wcha.org/about-the-wcha/ to learn more about the WCHA and http://store.wcha.org/WCHA-New-Membership.html to join.

It is also possible that you could have another number or manufacturer if none of these descriptions match your canoe. If that is the case, photographs of the serial number, deck, side profile, seats, and other details would be helpful in identifying the canoe. Feel free to reply here if you have any other questions. Hi Greg, Thanks for the help. I'll have to look over the photos carefully, that's all i have at this time, a photo of the serial number. That middle numbers hard to read I think the tip of a keel screw is right there in the number. All other numbers show up great even the 17 Definetly closed gunwale though i don't know if that is always specified on all build sheets. I'll have the cutomer check the number more carefully. I'll let you know so we have a record of it. thanks, Dave

David,

Carleton #11259 was a 17-foot boat built in the Old Town factory in 1915 and shipped to New York City. It was a CS (or common sense) model with spruce gunwales, birch decks, thwarts and seats, and a keel. The original color was dark green.

I have attached the build record for you.

The Carlton canoe with serial number 11259 is 17 feet long, CS (common sense or standard) grade, with western red cedar planking, spruce gunwales, birch decks, thwarts and seats and was equipped with a keel. It was built in 1915, looking like it was finished late in May, 1915 (the date stamp is unclear). The exterior was originally painted dark green. It was shipped on July 12, 1915 to New York City. A scan of this build record can be found by following the link behind the thumbnail image attached below.

I hope this matches your canoe, but if it doesn't, we can try some more. Feel free to reply here if you have any other questions.

Thank you Norman and also Greg. That seems to be correct now for the canoe. Also Benson I think replied but it didn't seem to get posted as a thread. But then I'm not to good with the computer stuff. If I get the job I'll post some photos. the canoe was broken TOTALLY in half by a tree falling on a boat house. One end of the canoe on one side and shot the other end across the room. hurricane Sandy. Thanks again, Dave

David,

I think Benson, Greg and I were replying at about the same time. Sounds like a horrible event for a 100-year-old canoe. If you get any pictures, we'd love to see them.

I had tried to reply but was having trouble with the forum software. Dan helped me sort it out but Norm and Greg had already posted the same information by then so I simply deleted my response to cut down on the duplication. Pictures would be great as Norm mentioned. Thanks,

Benson
