Life is simple . . just add waterl
Hi. I would appreciate help with obtaining the build sheet for an Old Town canoe with serial number 178961. This is most likely a late 1960's canoe but I'm interested in where it was originally shipped to. Thanks in advance for the assistance.

The Old Town canoe with serial number 178961 is an 18 foot long Guide model with a keel. It was built between September and November, 1967. The original exterior paint color was G. S. (Guide's Special) green. It shipped on February 7th, 1968 to Albemarle, North Carolina. A scan of this build record is shown below.

This scan and several hundred thousand more were created with substantial grants from the Wooden Canoe Heritage Association (WCHA) and others as you probably know well. A description of the project to preserve these records is available at http://www.wcha.org/catalogs/old-town/records/ if you want more details. I hope that you will donate, join or renew your membership to the WCHA so that services like this can continue. See https://www.woodencanoe.org/about to learn more about the WCHA and https://www.woodencanoe.org/shop to donate or join.

It is also possible that you could have another number or manufacturer if this description doesn't match the canoe. Feel free to reply here if you have any other questions.

Thanks so much Benson. This is exactly what I was looking for. I suspected it was shipped to Economy Auto Supply. The City of Albemarle, NC purchased 25-35 of these as livery canoes in the late 1960’s. It has no seats but thwarts in place of seats. I think this was done for livery and scout canoes but someone will have to confirm that for me. It’s been fiberglassed which will be a labor of love to be restored. Is there a way to know who purchased it versus the place it was shipped to? I suspect that the auto supply store was not a dealer but a shipping point.

No, unless the purchaser later contacted the company for some other reason. I've found records for 16 canoes that shipped there between 1962 and 1968 (including a 25 foot long War canoe model). There were several Guide models shipped to Albemarle with thwarts in place of seats and this was a common request from the Boy Scouts. The Google Street View image of the building at 250 South First Street indicates that it is empty now. You may be able to find a local newspaper article from that era if this was a big project in the town. Good luck,

Benson

Thank you Benson! I'm familiar with these canoes and the war canoe. It went out about once a summer and was a beast to put back in the canoe shed.
