I am wondering if anyone has information about a 9' OT dinghy with SN 157219 9 ? The canvas hull is white and the boat is in very good condition. Thanks.

The Old Town boat with serial number 157219 is a 9 foot long, AA (top or premium) grade dinghy model with half ribs, outside stem, and a keel. It was built between February and September 1952. The original exterior paint color was white. It was shipped to Brunswick, Maine on April 30, 1953. A scan of this build record can be found by following the link behind the thumbnail image attached below.

This scan and several hundred thousand others were created with substantial grants from the Wooden Canoe Heritage Association (WCHA) and others. A description of the project to preserve these records is available at http://www.wcha.org/ot_records/ if you want more details. I hope that you will join or renew your membership to the WCHA so that services like this can continue. See http://www.wcha.org/about-the-wcha/ to learn more about the WCHA and http://store.wcha.org/WCHA-New-Membership.html to join.

It is also possible that you could have another number or manufacturer if this description doesn't match your canoe. Feel free to reply here if you have any other questions.

Thanks Greg for that information! It will be very helpful to us.
Any ideas as to what the value might be???
Thanks again,

There are a number of significant variables in determining the value of any boat -- and a major variable in valuing any wooden canoe or boat is being able to find potential buyers who find wooden boats more desirable (or at least as desirable) as a similar plastic boat.

For a discussion of the issues involved in valuing a canoe, see http://forums.wcha.org/showthread.ph...en-canoe-worth. You would have the same issues in valuing a wooden dinghy.

One thing not mentioned in that discussion is the impact that accessories, or their lack, might have on price. Dinghys are sometimes equipped for sailing -- something that would make a boat more desirable to some people, and less to others. The build record makes no mention of your boat being so equipped, but boats can be rigged for sailing after delivery from the OT factory -- by a dealer or owner -- something that would no show on the build record.

If you do plan to sell the dinghy, don't forget that as a WCHA member, you have free access to our classified ads.
