Any information on this canoe would be most helpful. It's been in the family for many years and it's history has gone "missing".

Hello--

Carleton 13862 is an 18 foot AA (top) grade Indian Princess model canoe, with red Western cedar planking, open mahogany gunwales, 30 inch mahogany decks, mahogany thwarts and seat frames. It was fitted with a keel and has outside stems and a floor rack. It was painted "mahogany", with a 2 1/2" white stripe 2" below the gunwales with "2 D ends" (which I believe means "turned-down ends") and the name "Hloked" on the right and left bow (I could be wrong about that word). The canoe was shipped May 3, 1919 to The Fair in Chicago (which was a large department store you can Google).

I hope this is your canoe because it sounds really spectacular!

Image of the scan of this record is attached below-- click on it to get a larger image.

This scan and several hundred thousand others were created with substantial grants from the Wooden Canoe Heritage Association (WCHA) and others. A description of the project to preserve these records is available athttp://www.wcha.org/ot_records/ if you want more details. I hope that you will join or renew your membership to the WCHA so that services like this can continue. See http://www.wcha.org/about-the-wcha/ to learn more about the WCHA and http://store.wcha.org/WCHA-New-Membership.html to join.

It is also possible that you could have another number or manufacturer if this description doesn't match your canoe. Feel free to reply here if you have any other questions.

More information on the Old Town Company can be found in Sue Audette's book, "Old Town, Our First Hundred Years", which is available through the WCHA store and most booksellers, eBay, Amazon, and public libraries.

This was part of a three page order that totaled over $2000. The details of this canoe are shown below. Please attach some pictures if the original design and name are still showing. Thanks,

Benson

Thank You Kathy. Your very complete history is accurate and without a doubt this is our canoe. Much appreciated. Unfortunately, over the years though the body is in excellent condition, it no longer is painted the original colors. If you know of a picture of this model (or another) with this color scheme, I'd love to see it. Would really like to take this beauty back to its "intended" colors.

Thank you Benson. Much appreciated. Will post some pictures of all of our canoes when I have the opportunity. My father-in-law was a skilled restorer and we are blessed to have several excellent canoes in our possession. One, of which I will be starting in the next few months when I'm done with exploring its history.

I haven't seen this exact color scheme but there are several similar ones that you can probably use to recreate it. The Old Town design at http://www.wcha.org/catalogs/old-town/designs/design27.gif shows a narrow stripe below the wales with turned down ends and edged with about 1/8 inch of another color. The one at http://www.wcha.org/catalogs/old-town/designs/design34.gif shows a stripe that is probably about 2.5 inches wide and placed around two inches below the wales (without the turned down ends or the edged color). Feel free to reply here if this doesn't answer your question and please post some pictures of how it looks when you are done.
