I am looking for information on a 1960's Old Town 16' wc canoe #172302 16. Thanks to all for your good works - keeping us in touch with our canoes' past!
I'm sorry about the delay in answering this but the record was mis-filed out of sequence and took some extra time to locate. The Old Town canoe with serial number 172302 is a 16 foot long Otca model with thwarts in place of seats and a keel. It was built between July and August, 1962. The original exterior paint color was O. T. (Old Town) yellow. It shipped on August 17th, 1962 to Tarrytown, New York. It was damaged in transit and returned on October 17th, 1962. The repairs required a new inside gunwale, paint, and two hours of labor as shown on the back side of the card. It was then resold to Alfred, Maine on July 3rd, 1963. Scans of both sides of this build record can be found by following the links behind the thumbnail images attached below.
These scans and several hundred thousand others were created with substantial grants from the Wooden Canoe Heritage Association (WCHA) and others. A description of the project to preserve these records is available at http://www.wcha.org/ot_records/ if you want more details. I hope that you will join or renew your membership to the WCHA so that services like this can continue. See http://www.wcha.org/wcha/ to learn more about the WCHA and http://www.wcha.org/join.php to join.
It is also possible that you could have another number or manufacturer if this description doesn't match your canoe. Feel free to reply here if you have any other questions.
