I was sent this number from the stem. Its from that funny gunwale UFO I posted on research. Ideas? Could it be 16 13574?

The Old Town canoe with the serial number 13574 is a 17' HW with sponsons.
13574 - 6360.jpg

The Old Town with the number 16135 is an 18' canoe.
16135 - 8846.jpg

Trying another number variation, the Old Town with the serial number 18574 is a 20' canoe.
18574 - 1663.jpg

So it seems that either you don't have an Old Town, or another look needs to be taken at the serial number.

I am told the actual serial number is... 16 13574. Can anyone help? I am on my way to look for myself.

Some other photos could help --

The serial number stamped into each stem end
better pictures of each deck and seat
a good profile of the whole canoe
the gunwales -- at the points where any thwarts are fixed, or may have been fixed
anything else that seems a bit odd or questionable

It looks like it could be a good boat, well worth restoration, no matter who the builder is.

Well, I got it now.

I snagged the canoe The serial number was off. it is 16 12574. They mistook a 2 for a three. Mahogany decks and double gunwales. Oak seat, twisted seat hangers. One thwart intact, I believe one is missing. No rot !!

That serial number is surely going to be Old Town. All features look like O.T., and this serial number places it where it should - pre-1910 or so.

The Old Town canoe with serial number 12574 is a 16 foot long, AA grade, Charles River model with red Western cedar planking, closed mahogany double gunwales, long mahogany decks, mahogany thwarts, mahogany seats, a keel, a floor rack, flag pole sockets, and painter rings. It was built between October, 1909 and February, 1910. The original exterior paint color was white with a 5/8 inch Cardinal stripe and the name "Nymph" on the right and left bow. This may have been similar to the one shown at http://www.wcha.org/catalogs/old-town/designs/design40.gif (with the colors reversed) which was later known as the design number 40. It shipped on February 11th, 1910 to Milwaukee, Wisconsin. A scan of this build record can be found by following the link behind the attached thumbnail image below.

This scan and several hundred thousand more were created with substantial grants from the Wooden Canoe Heritage Association (WCHA) and others as you probably know well. A description of the project to preserve these records is available at http://www.wcha.org/ot_records/ if you want more details. I hope that you will join or renew your membership to the WCHA so that services like this can continue. See http://www.wcha.org/about-the-wcha/ to learn more about the WCHA and http://store.wcha.org/WCHA-New-Membership.html to join.

It is also possible that you could have another number or manufacturer if this description doesn't match your canoe. I have a very similar canoe (with two thwarts) as described at http://forums.wcha.org/showthread.php?3823&p=19415#post19415 if you want any detailed pictures during your restoration. Feel free to reply here if you have any other questions. Nice find and good luck with the restoration,

Benson

HC Reed Company was a big department store type of retailer in Milwaukee in the early 1900's.
They received/sold many OT Canoes......
I recall restoring some that were from their store in the past....

Very very nice find. Congratulations on a very nice canoe.

It looks like you may have some exit holes to deal with in the seats? Be careful with that and keep the boat outside until this is dealt with.

Borate pesticides (Tim-bor and Bora Care)are required to treat this if they are available for sale in your state. Tim-bor seems to work really well but it is not available here in NYS.They also say that heat can kill the larvae.
