Wrong Serial Number

canoe's daughter

Curious about Wooden Canoes
About 2 years ago, I requested a build record for my father's Old Town Canoe. He gave me the serial number and someone sent me the records. We have since re-furbished the canoe and realised the records we received were wrong. Could someone help me find the correct build records? the Serial number is: 16-12380. It is a mahogany Old Town Canoe. Thanks for your help!

Well, if your wood identification is correct, you still may have the wrong number...

12380 is a 16' CS (Common Sense) grade Charles River, with spruce rails and a keel delivered to Milwalkee WI on 2/11/1910. There is no mention of mahogany in the build record - that would usually be on a AA grade boat. The build record is attached.

I tried the record for 12880 (3 & 8 are common mis-IDs) but that is a CS grade Charles River as well - no mahogany.

12330 is a 17' CS grade HW model.

The Carlton record for 12380 is an 18' boat with spruce trim.

Take a close look at your numbers in both stems or check your wood identification. Is it possible that the mahogany was added in a later restoration?

Scans of approximately 210,000 records were created with substantial grants from the Wooden Canoe Heritage Association (WCHA) and others. Sorry, my Dad gave me the wrong number. It should be: 16-12320 with mahogany planking??? Hopefullt this makes more sense. Thanks for your quick reply and investigations.

That's a little better. It is very unlikely that your boat has mahogany planking - that would have been VERY heavy & expensive and not something that Old Town routinely offered.

The build record for 12320 indicates that is is a 16' Charles River in AA grade, with Western Cedar (red) planking, mahogany seats, mahogany thwarts, long (usually 20") mahogany decks and open mahogany gunwales. It was painted dark red and delivered to Rochester NY in February of 1910. A scan of the build record is attached.
