The local newspaper ran a story about a 19th century dug out canoe from the Menominee Tribe in Wisconsin that has been placed on exhibit at the Natural History Museum at the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point.

Nice looking boat. Any guesses why the builder left the two cleats in the bottom? If this were Polynesia, they'd be lashing points for outrigger booms, but of course outriggers weren't used in N. America. They wouldn't seem to add any needed strength.
