Any guesses as what kind of wood this is? I received a mix lot of lumber, some sitka spruce, some western red cedar and this, which was being called cherry. I am thinking this some kind of "mahogany" maybe meranti?

Both of your guesses are correct, it's not cherry and it does look like Philippine Mahogany.

I'm thinking Spanish cedar too, what does it smell like?

Well, rather hard to describe, taxing my descriptive skill here, not like Western Red Cedar, not like Northern white cedar, more like dark umber, or maybe I am thinking of an imperial stout. More seriously, I really cannot describe the smell, but it is heavy, way more heavy that cherry and more heavy than oak. Attached is an image of the underside of a Thompson deck, which I always thought might be Spanish cedar, as whatever that deck is made of, it is light.

Looks like Philippine Mahogany, not sure. You should ask an experienced person.

I am pretty sure it is meranti, made some nice thwarts out of it.

What is the density of meranti?
This would rule out any mahogany I've ever seen.
