Vin#XTC17849M78J Old Town Canoe

You have the Old Town canoe with serial number 217849 which shipped in May of 1978. The scanned Old Town records stop at 210999 so none of us here have any newer information for canoes like yours. You may be able to contact the customer service department at the Old Town Canoe Company and get a copy from their paper records if they are not too busy. Please reply here if they are not able to satisfy your request. The information at http://www.boatsafe.com/nauticalknowhow/hin.htm may help you decode this number.

Thanks for your help Benson. So the vin number and serial numbers are different? If I am reading it right this would indicate that the boat is 17 feet long. When you put a tape measure on it the length is only 16'. Can you tell what model I have?

The Coast Guard regulations for a hull identification number only permit a five digit serial number so Old Town Canoe decided to simply omit the first digit of their serial numbers which were already in the six digit range at that point. The 17 within your number does not indicate the length. You can probably guess the model by getting the 1978 catalog from http://store.wcha.org/The-Complete-Old-Town-Canoe-Company-Catalog-Collection-CD-ROM.html and compare the pictures and listed dimensions to your canoe. Another option is to post some pictures and the dimensions here so we can guess. Good luck,

Benson

The "M78J" of the US Coast Guard Manufacturer's Identification Code (MIC) indicate this vessel used the "model year format" MIC and she was made in May 1978.
M = model year format
78 = 1978 year
J = May
