And so too does Dave, an amateur mycologist, like this , but fearful of too much education regarding the purported benefits of foraging. So in that spirit I must advise the " Hens " are normally infested with little black beetle maggots and the " Chickens " are slimy when immature and tough as hell when mature. Watch out for the Amanitae . They can kill you liver and there are too many look-a-likes to consider any of them especially the Yellow patches ! When I was a kid Dad and I would forage around the perimeter of Walden Pond and while he never really knew for sure what we gathered , I came to understand that, as has been said..." things are seldom what they seem, milk can masquerade as cream ".
