Requesting information on the following two serial numbers. I believe them to be Old Town serial numbers:

16757

14919 17

Thanks for the help.

John

Welcome, the Old Town canoe with serial number 16757 is a 17 foot long, CS (Common Sense or middle) grade, HW (heavy water) model with red western cedar planking, closed spruce gunwales, ash decks, ash thwarts, ash seats, spruce outside finish rails, a keel, painter ring, and a middle thwart. It was built between February and June, 1911. The original exterior paint color was maroon. It shipped on June 29th, 1911 to Sault Ste. Marie, Michigan.

The Old Town canoe with serial number 14919 is a 16 foot long, CS (Common Sense or middle) grade, Charles River model with red western cedar planking, closed spruce gunwales, birch decks, ash thwarts, ash seats, spruce outside finish rails, and a keel. It was built between July and August, 1910. The original exterior paint color was dark green. It shipped on November 22nd, 1911 to Columbia, South Carolina.

Scans of these build records can be found by following the links at the attached thumbnail images below.

These scans and several hundred thousand more were created with substantial grants from the Wooden Canoe Heritage Association (WCHA) and others. A description of the project to preserve these records is available at http://www.wcha.org/catalogs/old-town/records/ if you want more details. I hope that you will join or renew your membership to the WCHA so that services like this can continue. See http://www.wcha.org/about-wcha to learn more about the WCHA and http://www.wcha.org/store/membership to join.

It is also possible that you could have another number or manufacturer if these descriptions don't match the canoes. The 17 following your second serial number indicates a 17 foot long canoe which doesn't match this build record. The Carleton and Kennebec records for this serial number don't show a 17 foot long canoe either. It is common for there to be a hidden digit in a serial number so the tips at http://www.wcha.org/forums/index.php?threads/791/ may help. Pictures of the numbers and the surrounding area could also be helpful. Feel free to reply here if you have any other questions.

Thanks, Benson. I really appreciate the quick response. I will look harder at the 14919 number.....my son and I debated whether it was 14949 or 14919....

I won't have time for a few days to get any supporting photos, but will try to do so to follow up my sleuthing.....

Thanks again!

The Old Town, Carleton, and Kennebec records for 14949 don't show a 17 foot canoe either. The serial numbers are stamped in each end of the canoe so check both if a single digit is not clear. Good luck,

Benson

OK. Clearly a closer look is warranted. We just put these up in the rafters for now (out of the coming weather), so it will be few days until we can get another close-up look. Thanks, Benson.
