Curious about Wooden Canoes

Am nearing the end of re planking a canoe with Red Cedar and it seems that everyone gives the planking a coat of linseed oil and mineral spirits or cupernol. Is this necesary for new planking and could one use a product like CWF which is a product the the FLOOD company makes for especially for cedar decks, fences, and siding. It seems that a product that is professionally formulated might work very well. Any comments or suggestions on this? Thanks Jim
