Oldtown #64625 16

Welcome, the Old Town canoe with serial number 64625 is an 18 foot long, CS (Common Sense or middle) grade, Charles River model with red western planking, open spruce gunwales, birch decks, birch thwarts, birch seats, a keel, two spruce paddles, and a folding slat chair. It was built between January and June, 1921. The original exterior paint color was dark green. It was shipped on July 2nd, 1921 to Chicago, Illinois. If you really have a 16 foot long canoe then my guess is that it may be the one with serial number 164625. This is a 16 foot long, CS (Common Sense or middle) grade, guide model with a keel. It was built between January and March, 1956. The original exterior paint color was turquoise blue. It was shipped on May 24th, 1965 to Falls Church, Virginia. Scans showing both of these build records can be found by following the links at the attached thumbnail images below.

These scans and several hundred thousand more were created with substantial grants from the Wooden Canoe Heritage Association (WCHA) and others. A description of the project to preserve these records is available at http://www.wcha.org/catalogs/old-town/records/ if you want more details. I hope that you will join or renew your membership to the WCHA so that services like this can continue. See http://www.wcha.org/about-wcha to learn more about the WCHA and http://www.wcha.org/store/membership to renew.

It is also possible that you could have another number or manufacturer if neither of these descriptions don't match. I would encourage you to measure the extreme overall length of your canoe in a straight line and attach some pictures of the serial numbers from each end here. Feel free to reply if you have any other questions.

Thank you Benson,

This is so cool. It looks like I have the 16' later model. It has been stored here at the Sycamore Island Canoe Club for many years and it seems to have been abandoned by the original owners. I have not yet find the name from the bill of sale in our archive member's list. It's still very interesting to learn that the boat was delivered 62 years ago to his house not far from here. Thanks again.

Joe
