Curious about Wooden Canoes
I recently purchased an old Town Canoe with serial number 131986. Could you please post the build information for this canoe. Haven’t taken possession yet but looks like it’s in good condition. Thanks. Mark

Welcome and congratulations, the Old Town canoe with serial number 131986 is an 18 foot long, AA (or top) grade, guide model with open mahogany gunwales, mahogany decks, mahogany thwarts, mahogany seats, half ribs, a keel, and outside stems. It was built between March, 1941 and June, 1942. The original exterior paint color was fire red. It was shipped on June 17th, 1942 to York, Pennsylvania. A scan showing this build record can be found by following the link at the attached thumbnail image below.

This scan and several hundred thousand more were created with substantial grants from the Wooden Canoe Heritage Association (WCHA) and others. A description of the project to preserve these records is available at http://www.wcha.org/catalogs/old-town/records/ if you want more details. I hope that you will join or renew your membership to the WCHA so that services like this can continue. See http://www.wcha.org/about-wcha to learn more about the WCHA and http://www.wcha.org/store/membership to join.

It is also possible that you could have another number or manufacturer if this description doesn't match your canoe. Feel free to reply here if you have any other questions.

Thanks Benson. It has been painted green but matches the description of mahogany wood work and the fact that I am about 5 miles south of York Pennsylvania which is the shipping destination leads me to believe it is the same boat. Can’t wait to get it and I’ll post pictures then
