Old Town?

Have a wood square back canoe that I dont know anything about. Serial # 2762 18. Is this an Old Town and what year?

That is a very low number for an Old Town, so not likely, unless some numbers are not visible. Pictures would help a lot: decks, stem profile, etc. Is it open or closed gunwale? What types of wood is it constructed from? Tom McCloud

There may be a few hidden digits as Tom mentioned. The information at http://forums.wcha.org/showthread.php?791 may help you find them. There is no Old Town record for that serial number. Number 2761 shipped in January, 1906 which is a few years before outboard motors were invented and well before Old Town started making square back canoes. Kennebec put number 2762 on a 14 foot long lapstrake rowboat in 1923. Pictures will probably be necessary to identify yours. Good luck,

Benson

Suggest you use the search function on these pages. There is a lot of information in these archives. Type in St.Louis, and you will get ~100 hits. Not all will apply. And get a copy of Wooden Canoe # 146, April 2008, which has a lengthy article on St.Louis canoes. Tom McCloud

I restored only one but I thought it was an excellent canoe. Well made, good quality and craftsmanship. they're good.

Is there much value and is there anyway to tell year built? Thanks for help

There is usually some value to an old wooden canoe like this but it depends on a number of factors. A good summary of this is available at http://forums.wcha.org/showthread.php?57 as Paul mentioned previously. The information at http://forums.wcha.org/knowledgebase/Manufacturers:St+Louis+Meramec+Canoe+Company indicates that this company was in business from around 1922 to about 1978. Good luck with it,

Benson

I think your canoe was built about January 1948. We have a June 1947 date for #2712 and a March 4, 1948 date for #2797.
On the record boards we have, #2762 is listed as an 18' Prospector. I was told by the last owner of the company that's what they called 18-footers with a transom. I have a #2623 which also has a transom, but for some reason it's not noted as a Prospector. Records just say 18' Transom, and the transom is a different shape than yours. But it's also only 16 ft. long with bilge keels and planer boards. How long is your canoe?
A St. Louis canoe is distinguished by the arrowhead-shaped decks.
