Curious about Wooden Canoes
Hi folks, I posted a thread and a couple of bad pics on this canoe in the research area above. Well, it turns out I WAS being stupid about the serial #s, they are REALLY faint on both stems. Anyway, looks like the # is 128453 16. Any help is truly appreciated, and my check for WCHA membership is in the mail, with two boats now I've gotta join! Thanks for everything,

Paul

The Old Town canoe with serial number 128453 is an 16 foot long, CS grade, Yankee model with open spruce gunwales, birch decks, birch trim, and a keel. It was built between November, 1939 and March, 1940. The original exterior paint was the design number 37. This may have looked like the image at http://www.wcha.org/catalogs/old-town/designs/design37.gif from the catalog. It shipped on March 18th, 1940 to Devon, Conn. A scan of this build record can be found by following the link behind the attached thumbnail image below.

This scan was created with substantial grants from the Wooden Canoe Heritage Association (WCHA) and others as you probably know well. A description of the project to preserve these records is available at http://www.wcha.org/catalogs/old-town/records/ if you want more details. I'm glad that you have joined the WCHA so that services like this can continue. See http://www.wcha.org/wcha/ to learn more about the WCHA.

The center thwarts were optional in this model so it is not ususual that yours only has two.

It is also possible that you could have another number or manufacturer if this description don't match your canoe. Feel free to reply here if you have any other questions. Welcome to the WCHA!

Benson
