Old Town serial 75596

The Old Town canoe with serial number 75596 is 16 feet long, CS (common sense or standard) grade, an Otca model with western red cedar planking, open spruce gunwales, 20” birch decks birch thwarts and seats, equipped with a keel and outside stems. It was built between December 1922 and January 1923. The exterior was originally painted bright red. It was shipped in 1923 on a date and to a location that I find unreadable on the build record. A scan of this build record can be found by following the link behind the thumbnail image attached below.

This scan and several hundred thousand others were created with substantial grants from the Wooden Canoe Heritage Association (WCHA) and others. A description of the project to preserve these records is available at http://www.wcha.org/ot_records/ if you want more details. I hope that you will join or renew your membership to the WCHA so that services like this can continue. See http://www.wcha.org/about-the-wcha/ to learn more about the WCHA and http://store.wcha.org/WCHA-New-Membership.html to join.

It is also possible that you could have another number or manufacturer if this description doesn't match your canoe. Feel free to reply here if you have any other questions.

Thank you Greg that's fantastic!
What's crazy is I can tell you where it was shipped because there is a brass placerd on the bow that say made for W.S Brown 523 Wood St Pittsburgh Pa. I did some research this evening and found he was a pretty prominent business man and sadly died in 1928 he was 79 years. So he was no spring chicken when he purchased this canoe. I purchased it from the granddaughter of the man who purchased from Mr. Brown so cool.

Karen, if you’re still interested in where your canoe came from, the W.S. Brown on Wood Street in Pittsburgh that you refer to was an outfitter store in Pittsburgh. So Mr. Brown was the seller (retail). I just purchased an Old Town with the same provenance - 1922.
