Old Town serial 122637 - 17

I have a fairly ancient Old Town canoe with a sail, mast, etc... My dad bought it used back in 1964 for $400, which was as much as one might spend on a car back then! Anyhow, could you please provide the year this fine craft was born? The serial number is 122637, and the 17 stamped a few inches away must be the length of the canoe. My dad loved this thing, and regularly used this thing for fishing, shooting rapids, and sailing, until about 5 years ago. I'm thinking of selling it to somebody who will love it back into its original ship-shape.

Welcome, the Old Town canoe with serial number 122637 is a 17 foot long, CS (common sense or middle) grade, HW (Heavy Water) model with open spruce gunwales, oak decks, oak thwarts, a keel, a mast seat, a mast step, and a rudder. It was built between July, 1937 and July, 1938. The original exterior paint color was dark green. It shipped on August 12th, 1938 to Grant, Michigan. A scan of this build record can be found below.

This scan and several hundred thousand more were created with substantial grants from the Wooden Canoe Heritage Association (WCHA) and others. A description of the project to preserve these records is available at http://www.wcha.org/catalogs/old-town/records/ if you want more details. I hope that you will donate, join or renew your membership to the WCHA so that services like this can continue. See http://www.wcha.org/about-wcha to learn more about the WCHA and http://www.wcha.org/store/membership to join.

It is also possible that you could have another number or manufacturer if this description doesn't match your canoe. Canoes with a family history are always extra special. The information at http://www.wcha.org/forums/index.php?threads/57/ may help if you decide to sell it. Feel free to reply here if you have any other questions.
