I just acquired an old canoe that someone had and didnt want to restore. I want to trace the info if I can about the canoe before I begin restoring it back. Here is the serial number 130590 17.

Welcome and congratulations, the Old Town canoe with serial number 130590 is a 13 foot long, AA (or top) grade, fifty pound model with open mahogany gunwales, mahogany decks, mahogany thwarts, mahogany seats, oval outside finish rails, a keel, and a floor rack. It was built between August, 1940 and June, 1942. The original exterior paint color was dark green. It shipped on August 12th, 1942 to Keene, New Hampshire. A scan of this build record can be found by following the link at the attached thumbnail image below.

This scan and several hundred thousand more were created with substantial grants from the Wooden Canoe Heritage Association (WCHA) and others. A description of the project to preserve these records is available at http://www.wcha.org/catalogs/old-town/records/ if you want more details. I hope that you will donate, join or renew your membership to the WCHA so that services like this can continue. See http://www.wcha.org/about-wcha to learn more about the WCHA and http://www.wcha.org/store/membership to join.

It is also possible that you could have another number or manufacturer if this description doesn't match the canoe. The 17 on the end of the serial number that you provided usually indicates a 17 foot long canoe. The information at http://www.wcha.org/forums/index.php?threads/791/ may help you confirm the correct serial number. Another option is to post some pictures here of the serial numbers from each end of the canoe. Feel free to reply here if you have any other questions. Good luck with the restoration,

    Benson
