Old Town "50 Pounder"

Doublegun

Curious about Wooden Canoes
Newbie needing a little help: will someone please direct me to (or share with me) specs for an Old Town "50 Pounder"? (I believe they were all 15' but confirmation would be great.) How wide were they? Depth, etc? And any pictures would certainly be appreciated.

Thanks

50 pounder

Here are two catalog pages from about 1920, one from 1958, which give dimensions. There have been 11’ and 13’ versions as well as the more common 15’. Here also are some pictures of my 15’ 1931 50#er as I bought it about 18 months ago. Since then I have rewoven the seats and painted it, but it needs repairs to several ribs, some planking, gunwales, and a new canvas -- all in good time. This one has the optional outside stem as well as a keel.

I find the 15’ easy to handle solo, and my wife and I enjoy paddling it together.

If you put “pounder” in the search function above, you will find quite a number of threads that give information on the OT 50 pounder, some with photos. Examples include:

Thanks, Greg. Searched "50 pounder" and "fifty pounder" with limited success. I appreciate the tip.

Thanks again.

Some pictures are available at http://forums.wcha.org/showthread.php?t=3968 as well. More specifications are listed at http://www.wcha.org/catalogs/old-town/specific.gif and http://www.wcha.org/catalogs/old-town/hull-x-s.gif shows a rough cross section of the hull. Additional information like this can be found on the Old Town Canoe Company Catalog Collection CD-ROM which is available from http://woodencanoe.org/catalog/prod...d=404&osCsid=39f7e6f54228bc26faca437d11ded5cb and http://www.dragonflycanoe.com/orderform.html on the web.

This model was first introduced in the 1910 catalog and was still being sold until a few years ago as the "Trapper" model. The model names, specifications and trim have changed a bit over the years but the basic form didn't.
