Hi. I recently acquired Old Town wood-canvas canoe #184313. Would you be able to tell me about its build history, model type, etc.? Thanks in advance, very much appreciated.
Welcome and congratulations, the Old Town canoe with serial number 184313 is a 15 foot long lightweight model with a keel. It was built between November and December, 1969. The original exterior paint color was red and then it was repainted yellow just before it left the factory. It shipped on July, 2nd, 1970 to Rutland, Vermont. A scan showing this build record can be found below.
This scan and several hundred thousand more were created with substantial grants from the Wooden Canoe Heritage Association (WCHA) and others. A description of the project to preserve these records is available at http://www.wcha.org/catalogs/old-town/records/ if you want more details. I hope that you will donate, join or renew your membership to the WCHA so that services like this can continue. See http://www.wcha.org/about-wcha to learn more about the WCHA and http://www.wcha.org/store/membership to join.
It is also possible that you could have another number or manufacturer if this description doesn't match your canoe. Feel free to reply here if you have any other questions.
Thanks, Benson. Yeah... we've got a few vintage Old Towns. Here's a photo of the 1937 16' Standard that I traded for the 15-footer that you identified (in the background). Loved the 16-footer but it was too heavy for my wife and I -- in our upper 60s -- to load on top of the car . So this lightweight 15-footer is better. I had the build sheet for the 16-footer and it left the factory in dark green -- was subsequently painted the same color as the 15-footer! Go figure.
