Got this canoe from my uncle and hoping to patch it up, looking for more info about this. Can’t figure out what this is made out of so we can repair it properly. Serial number 212787, dimensions are 17 feet x 36 in across x 16 in deep, light green outside, inside looks like it’s always been a lighter color but could be faded, seems like plastic seats. Thanks!

Welcome, the Old Town canoe with serial number 212787 is a 17 foot long, Chipewyan Tipper model with aluminum inserts in the rails. It was built in March, 1976. The original exterior vinyl color was avocado. It shipped on April 29th, 1976 to Springfield, Maine. The back side of the scan indicates that it had some skin breaks on the inside and outside of the bow along with some bad lines and soft spots on the inside. Scans showing both sides this build record can be found by following the links at the attached thumbnail images below.

These scans and several hundred thousand more were created with substantial grants from the Wooden Canoe Heritage Association (WCHA) and others. A description of the project to preserve these records is available at http://www.wcha.org/catalogs/old-town/records/ if you want more details. I hope that you will donate, join or renew your membership to the WCHA so that services like this can continue. See http://www.wcha.org/about-wcha to learn more about the WCHA and http://www.wcha.org/store/membership to join.

It is also possible that you could have another number or manufacturer if this description doesn't match the canoe. More information about your canoe is available from http://www.wcha.org/store/complete-old-town-canoe-company-catalog-collection in the scanned catalogs. Your canoe is made from acrylonitrile-butadiene-styrene plastic which is also known as Royalex or Oltonar. An epoxy glue may be required to repair it. Feel free to reply here if you have any other questions.
