Curious about Wooden Canoes
Hello!
I just recently decided I wanted to tackle a old canoe remodel, this will be my first one, and depending on how it goes ,maybe my last , maybe many more to come who knows...
With that being said I just wanted to have an idea of what I have. The gentleman that I bought from said it was a 1947 OT. The number is 148563. It’s 18’ long and has a square/flat stern.
Thanks

Welcome and congratulations, the Old Town with serial number 148563 is an 18 foot long, CS (common sense or middle) grade, special square end paddling model with red Western cedar planking, open spruce gunwales, half ribs, a keel, outside stems, sponsons, rowing seats, and rowlocks. It was built between April and July 1947. The original exterior paint color was dark green. It shipped on March, 8th, 1948 to Knoxville, Tennessee. A scan showing this build record can be found by following the link at the attached thumbnail image below.

This scan and several hundred thousand more were created with substantial grants from the Wooden Canoe Heritage Association (WCHA) and others. A description of the project to preserve these records is available at http://www.wcha.org/catalogs/old-town/records/ if you want more details. I hope that you will donate, join or renew your membership to the WCHA so that services like this can continue. See http://www.wcha.org/about-wcha to learn more about the WCHA and http://www.wcha.org/store/membership to join.

It is also possible that you could have another number or manufacturer if this description doesn't match your boat. Feel free to reply here if you have any other questions.

Welcome Dsliger!
You can diffidently find all the help you need to restore your canoe here in the forum. You may also find some people in your area that can help. There is a Kentucky/Tennessee chapter. Look on the Local Chapters tab and in the Events. We are doing a WCHA promotion event in Middle TN on March 21st. There will be some members there that would be good to talk to. You could even bring your canoe for others to see. Let me know if I can if I can help
