The Old Town canoe with serial number 146681 is a 17 foot long, CS (common sense or middle) grade, Otca model with open spruce gunwales, as decks, ash thwarts, ash seats, and a keel. It was built between September and November, 1946. The original exterior paint color was dark Yale blue. It shipped on November 23rd, 1946 to Chautauqua, New York. The back side of the record indicates that it may have moved to Greensboro, North Carolina by October of 1976 when there was a previous request for a copy of this build record. Scans showing both sides of this build record can be found by following the links at the attached thumbnail images below.

These scans and several hundred thousand more were created with substantial grants from the Wooden Canoe Heritage Association (WCHA) and others. A description of the project to preserve these records is available at http://www.wcha.org/ot_records/ if you want more details. I hope that you will join or renew your membership to the WCHA so that services like this can continue. See http://www.wcha.org/about-the-wcha/ to learn more about the WCHA and http://store.wcha.org/WCHA-New-Membership.html to join.

It is possible that you could have another number or manufacturer if this description don't match your canoe. Wood seats were common during this era due to lingering shortages of cane from the Second World War. Feel free to reply here if you have any other questions.

Regarding the seats on your canoe-- yes, they're original. WWII interrupted the supply of cane that canoe builders used for canoe seats, and Old Town responded by producing seats with slats. It seems cane became available again sometime in 1947.

Wow, thank you so much for the replies and the detailed information. This information is exact (previous owner and location match from the back of the record) and what an incredible resource!
