I'd appreciate build sheet information on an Old Town canoe with serial number 143332 18 - bought used by my dad in the early 1950's and still in the family.

Thanks very much!

Welcome, the Old Town canoe with serial number 143332 is an 18 foot long Guide model with red western cedar planking, open spruce gunwales, ash decks, ash thwarts, ash seats, and a keel. It was built between November, 1945 and February, 1946. The original exterior paint color was G. S. (Guide's Special) green. It shipped in March 12th, 1946 to Milwaukee, Wis. A scan showing this build record is attached below.

This scan and several hundred thousand more were created with substantial grants from the Wooden Canoe Heritage Association (WCHA) and others. A description of the project to preserve these records is available at http://www.wcha.org/catalogs/old-town/records/ if you want more details. I hope that you will donate to, join or renew your membership to the WCHA so that services like this can continue. See http://www.wcha.org/about-wcha to learn more about the WCHA and http://www.wcha.org/store/membership to join.

It is also possible that you could have another number or manufacturer if this description doesn't match your canoe. Feel free to reply here if you have any other questions. Canoes with a family history are always extra special.

Thank you, Benson, for your quick response! That's definitely a match. From its Milwaukee base, this Guide went on many fishing trips ranging from Ontario to the Florida Keys, and is now in retirement in Arizona.
