Machias River

Enthusiastic about Wooden Canoes
My brother and I took a five-day trip down the Machias this May in our 17' Headwaters Prospector. We portaged into Fourth Machias Lake and went downstream from there all the way to the town of Machias where it meets the ocean. Our water was still pretty high, so the rapids were generally large and splashy. We portaged most of the rapids that had trails, but we still got to run quite a lot. All in all a wonderful trip to start the summer.

Interestingly, the high-water mark from earlier in the spring was four to six feet above what we had, so it must have been really rocking in April. In some parts we could see scars on the trees from ice floes.
